Kvernufoss — Only a Short Walk from Skógafoss
Around a 15-minute walk from the much more famous Skógafoss, Kvernufoss is often overlooked by people who venture this far south. Hidden within a narrow gorge, this 30-metre-high waterfall offers a level of peace and solitude that’s rare even in this part of Iceland. After the short hike from either Skógafoss or the Skógar Museum (which is absolutely worth a visit), you enter a lush canyon where the sound of rushing water grows louder with every step.
What makes Kvernufoss extra special is the fact that you can walk behind it. Standing in the cool mist, watching the world through a curtain of water, feels like stepping into another realm. It’s a beautiful stop if you’re after hidden gems in South Iceland and a moment of calm away from the busier tourist trail. And if you time your visit for early morning or toward evening, you may even have this special place to yourself!

Gljúfrabúi — Hiding in a Canyon Near Seljalandsfoss!
Why have one hidden waterfall when you can enjoy two? Like Kvernufoss, Gljúfrabúi is close to another more famous falls, but this time it’s Seljalandsfoss. It takes around 10 minutes to walk between the two. However, you will need to cross a shallow stream and climb over rocks to reach Gljúfrabúi, so dress appropriately!
The effort is well worth it, though. Gljúfrabúi, which translates as the “Canyon Dweller”, hides behind a narrow crack in the cliffs, partially enclosed in a mossy chamber that feels like a secret world. Inside, the roar of the water echoes off the canyon walls, and sunlight beams through the mist in shifting patterns.
It’s one of those must-visit places in Iceland that doesn’t always make the guidebooks, but everyone who experiences it leaves feeling like they’ve discovered something truly special. Wear waterproof footwear and prepare to get a little wet. It’s part of the fun!

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon — One of Iceland’s Most Breathtaking Sights
Few landscapes feel as otherworldly as Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, just outside Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Carved by glacial meltwater over thousands of years, the canyon winds for nearly two kilometres, with sheer walls rising up to 100 metres high. From the viewing paths above, you’ll see the river snake through the gorge below, creating a view that’s worthy of any sci-fi or fantasy film.

Vatnajökull Glacier — Europe’s Largest Glacier by Volume

For photographers, Reynisfjara is best visited early or late in the day, when the light is low and the crowds are thin. Vík is also a handy stop for anyone travelling along the Iceland Ring Road. It’s a great place to refuel, grab a meal, or stay overnight before continuing east or west. The village church, perched on the hill above, offers one of the most photogenic views in Iceland, especially in the soft evening light. In summer, puffins can often be spotted nesting along the nearby cliffs, making Vík a great base for wildlife watchers too.

Höfn — The Gateway to the East Fjords
At the far eastern end of Iceland’s south coast, Höfn serves as a natural endpoint to any west-to-east journey, and it’s the perfect base for glacier adventures. Often called the “Capital of the Southeast”, it’s a small harbour town known for its relaxed atmosphere, seafood restaurants, and easy access to Vatnajökull Glacier.
Spend an evening walking along the harbour, enjoy fresh langoustine at Pakkhús, and watch the light shift across the distant glacier peaks.
