Are you ready to conquer Iceland’s highest mountain? Standing at 2,110 metres on the Vatnajökull ice cap, Hvannadalshnúkur is the pinnacle of the Land of Fire and Ice. But despite its modest elevation, this is a serious alpine objective, involving glacier travel, long distances, and highly variable mountain conditions.
This guided Hvannadalshnúkur ascent is part of our wider range of Iceland adventure activities. Our expert team of adventurers has designed an excursion for guests seeking a challenging, professionally guided summit experience, delivered in small groups with a strong emphasis on safety, preparation, and sound alpine decision-making.

Elevation: 2,110 m
Season: Typically April to July (if conditions allow)
Technical Experience: Not required
Fitness Requirement: Very good hillwalking endurance
Weather Window Practice: Trips are operated within safe weather windows; guides will adjust timing and routes to align with optimal weather conditions.
Iceland’s alpine mountains typically range from 1,500 to 2,110 metres above sea level. However, due to our country’s northern latitude, exposure to North Atlantic weather systems, strong winds, cold temperatures, and extensive glaciation, conditions are often comparable to those found on 3,000 to 4,000-metre peaks in the Alps.
As a result, Hvannadalshnúkur summit tours and similar climbs should be approached as true alpine climbs, not hikes. Weather can change rapidly, and conservative decision-making is essential.
If you’re unsure whether this experience is right for you, consider one of our sub-alpine Iceland glacier tours instead.
All summit trips operate with a maximum ratio of one guide to four guests.
The small groups on our Hvannadalshnúkur guided ascents allow for:
Route choice, pacing, turnaround times, and summit attempts are determined on the day by your guide. Their decision is based on weather, snow and glacier conditions, and group ability.
Reaching the summit is never guaranteed. A safe return is always the priority.
While our Hvannadalshnúkur tour involves physically demanding alpine objectives, previous technical mountaineering experience is not required.
All technical skills required for glacier travel (rope systems, crampon use, ice axe technique) are taught and managed by the guide during the trip.
Final participation approval remains at the guide’s discretion to ensure group safety and cohesion.
