Vatnajökull Glacier Hike & Ice Cave Tour

Doing a Vatnajökull glacier hike and visiting its famous ice caves is one of the most exhilarating and fulfilling experiences possible in Iceland. Not only is it an exciting adventure in the stunning wild landscapes of Iceland, but it also pushes you out of your comfort zone, helping you to achieve something truly remarkable. With the reward of a large ice cave in the wilderness.

On this adventure-packed day, you will hike beyond the crowds to explore the further reaches of an outlet glacier that’s part of the Vatnajökull ice cap. Keep reading to learn more, and please get in touch if you have any questions.

This is our largest and most comprehensive glacier hike and ice cave tour. In fact, this is the only one that we have lovingly crafted ourselves as both other options come from high-quality partners. This Vatnajökull glacier hike is pretty challenging; if you’d prefer something a little easier, opt for our Blue Ice Cave Adventure as it’s a couple of hours shorter and is a little easier. For the easiest option, choose our 3.5 Vatnajökull Glacier Ice Cave Tour.

Delivering High-quality Tours with Only Four Guests to a Guide

At Ice Guardians, we have the lowest guest-to-guide ratio on the market at 4:1.

This means our Iceland glacier activities deliver high-quality experiences that involve more adventure, education & adaptability. In smaller groups, skilled guides can take you into the further reaches of glaciers, and explore terrain that larger groups simply can’t.

This opens the door to the possibility of discovering temporary features on the glacier that you and no one else have ever seen or ventured into. Expect to learn and use a whole range of crampon techniques to travel safely in technical terrain, including the possibility of minor ice climbing if the route requires it.

You’ll be informed on the surrounding nature and landscape formation by experienced and knowledgeable guides, making the experience more meaningful and giving you a newfound love of glaciers! Every full-day glacier hike (and ice cave) in Iceland we undertake is a unique exploration as routes often change as the glacier melts and evolves.

Are you ready to start planning your own Vatnajökull glacier ice cave adventure? If you’re looking for even more adventures in and around Vatnajökull National Park, browsing our Iceland hiking and glacier trips and courses is the perfect place to start.
