Join Us for a Vatnajökull Hiking Adventure

This thrilling Vatnajökull glacier walk is a partner tour with Glacier Adventure. As local experts, they ensure that every adventurer enjoys a personal, unforgettable experience. During this tour, you will explore the wonders of Breiðamerkurjökull, a stunning outlet glacier which extends from the Vatnajökull Glacier.

As local guides of Vatnajökull, Glacier Adventure knows the best spots off the beaten path and away from the tourist crowds, allowing you to have a unique experience in more secluded corners of Europe’s largest glacier by volume.

Once you step onto the glacier, it will feel like you have landed on an icy planet. You might see some small caves, tunnels, waterfalls and streams that form sinkholes called ‘moulins’, and other beautiful ice formations. The glacier also carries ashes of past volcanic eruptions, which often form a pyramid, called ‘dirt cones’.

As your Vatnajökull glacier walk progresses, your guide will share fascinating information about the glacier. By learning about its history, formation, how it affects our community, and how it continues to change and shape the landscape every day, you can enjoy a more immersive experience.

This Vatnajökull tour starts and ends at our cosy base camp at Hali, only 12km east of Jökulsárlón, i.e. The Glacier Lagoon. At Hali you will be welcomed by the Glacier Adventure team and provided with all the necessary equipment, like crampons, ice axes, a helmet, and a harness. Hiking boots are available for rent if you don‘t have them with you.

It’s then time to jump in their modified jeeps and enjoy the drive to the glacier. This journey takes around 30 to 40 minutes. After arriving at the parking lot, you will walk towards the glacier in a lunar landscape that has been shaped through the years by the retreating glacier. This leg of the Vatnajökull hiking adventure also takes around 30 to 40 minutes.

The total duration of this locally guided tour of Vatnajökull is between 3.5 and 4 hours, with 1 to 1.5 hours on the glacier. The entire experience is a fantastic introduction to Vatnajökull National Park.

This Vatnajökull hiking tour is easy, family-friendly, and has a minimum age limit of 10 years old. If you’re unsure whether this is the right tour for you, browse our full range of adventure trips and courses in Iceland to find the perfect fit.
